12th July 1941
We are loading “Kerosene (paraffin) and “Benzine”.
During the morning the weather behaved itself fairly well, but during the evening – just as we were leaving – a terrific thunderstorm came on. We had just passed “Bayonne” on our way to the Narrows, when a terrific flash of lightening struck a barge just astern of us. It had a whole battery of A/A guns “beat hollow”!
Several minor flashes went down our rigging and lightening conductor.
We are now anchored at the quarantine post.
