12th May 1940
I started out on my Mt. Eden trip. I started out on a tram, but as I got on, it soon began to rain, and as I had left my raincoat, I came back to the docks. It left off raining very soon after, but decided to leave it till another day.
They were working today, quite close to our ship.
Another man was killed on the “Rangitata”, which was opposite us in dock. It was a shock, and came as a surprise.
Terrific gale tonight.
Tomorrow we go on my charabanc trip.
New Zealanders My impression of the people is a very good one, on the whole. Of course one cannot say there are some nice people, but on the whole they are ill-mannered, and rather blunt. I don’t think Auckland is a very nice place, but the climate is good, that seems to be the general opinion around here. Auckland is considered to have the best all round climate in the world. These people came from Napier, where the big earthquake was in 1931. They said the whole town had been rebuilt, and now looks very nice.
Auckland is a very prosperous town, although wages are high (4.10s.a week general wage). But of course the prices out here are high. A small box of chocolates costs 1/6, and a haircut 1/6.
