13th April 1942

At 7:30 this morning we sailed for New York Harbour where we intend to anchor for the night.

No 1 and myself are on 6 on and 6 off watches until we reach Halifax. My watch is from 2–8, morning and afternoon.

We are carrying two American soldiers back with us as passengers. It seems queer to see soldiers having their bunks made for them!

One of them is a New England stater which is rather interesting  as I heard a lot about them from the Tetlows and the other Virginian.

Both seem pretty quiet and well-educated, none of the blustering screen-type – Yank being present.

They expect to be stationed in or near London, and one of them said he wanted to visit Stratford on-because he had read a lot of Shakespeare!
