13th December 1941
We left with the convoy at about 1.30pm, but had to drop out soon after clearing land, because of engine trouble.
We took about 6 hours repairing, but are now attempting to catch the convoy up. The Commodore was unable to sail, so the Vice Commodore is acting as Comm.
When I stayed ashore one night at the Angel Services Club, I met Pat, the gunner from the “Ethel”. He said the convoy which the Ethel was in which was attacked in mid-Atlantic had 17 ships torpedoed. The behaviour of the officers when the Ethel was torpedoed was disgraceful. Pat has been torpedoed 3 times consecutively. Since I left, he has done 3 trips and has been “torpd” on each!
He met Jock’s young brother in Freetown after he came back from 7 days in an open boat.
One of the boats was 17 days as nobody knew how to navigate.
