13th March 1945

I expected a phone call from Hugh this morning but decided that I would have to leave beforehand on my bike. I got as far as Orpington then ‘phoned home and found that there was no need to go back until tonight so returned home. After dinner, I went down to Purely for a hair cut and met Mrs Graham. She said that Eric was taking his semi finals in a fortnight’s time.

I went into the library soon after, and bumped into Joyce Barnes as I came out. She was waiting at the entrance with a pram and baby: I said  ”It is isn’t it?” and she said “Yes it is!” Then I asked whether the baby belonged to her and she replied “No, we don’t have time for that sort of thing in the forces”! She turned out to be a wireless operator in the ATS and had her training on the I.O.M. Kathleen Page is in the WAAFs in Scotland.

We talked on for quite a while about nothing in particular: mainly recalling old times. She has developed into a very nice girl.

Eventually I got my hair-cut, and went home again. Dad decided that it would be better for me to go to Lewisham by bike and train to Gravesend, so I ‘cycled to Lewisham in time to catch the 2300 hrs train. We arrived in Gravesend at 2355 only to learn that the last ferry went at 2345. There was a number of people hanging about, and we all had hopes of getting  across at 0115, but it only came back to tie up.
