ACCOUNT OF TRIP AT BACK. After having a very well needed haircut for 1/6, I went for a charabanc ride round Auckland. It lasted for two hours and was well worth 4 shillings. We visited Mt. Eden (once more), Ellerslie Racecourse, Tamaki Heights, and came back along the waterfront road. A fuller account of this trip is given at the back of this diary. The driver acted as guide — speaking as he drove! It was a very interesting experience, and very good fun travelling on your own. I spoke to several people, who were on holiday from the South Island. They seem much nicer than those in the North Island. One woman, who was travelling with her nephew and sister living in Buckinghamshire, so knew all about the trouble and had also visited England. She said it was a very nice place, but the climate was no good. That seems to be the general opinion around here.

I find it very interesting to watch the loading of the ship. It is really amazing. Looking down one of the hatches, one sees floor after floor, all ready to be loaded up (the hatches are very deep). They even have a moving belt schedule. This ship takes a really amazing amount of cargo, and one wonders where it all goes, not only that, she has a speed of 18 knots.

Managed to get a very good coloured photo of local area and guide.
