Location
Hull - Anchored in Humber
Age
17 Years

15th July 1940

I went ashore this morning, to post some letters, including my free railway voucher. I bought some soap as well, because they don’t supply it on board. I went in a shop for a jolly good hair cut and shampoo, as it is unlikely that I shall get one for some time.

The skipper came on board again at about 4am, and it was at this time, that they started loading on coal again. We have now 1550 tns., on board. We sailed at about 4pm., and anchored in the Humber. I went on watch for two hours, and will have to go on again at 1 o’clock B.S.T. An urgent message came through asking ships to look out for overdue aircraft.

My boss is more particular about keeping the log than Mr Salway was, but no doubt I shall soon get used to it all, in spite of slight differences. I doubt whether I shall stay in this room for long as the door of my cabin is next to the skipper’s, and it makes an awful noise. He hates being disturbed at night. He wants to convert the old “hospital” into a cabin, because as he says, there is no room for a pilot to sleep in! Anyway, we’ll see how things go.
