16th August 1940

Knowing that watches would very soon be coming into force, I spent the whole of this morning and afternoon in my bunk. We were supposed to sail at 2pm, but we missed the tide and so have had to wait until 4am tomorrow. The weather has been glorious, but the flies have been a pest. In the evening I went ashore and saw “The Return of Frank James”.

As Jock was on all night watch I yarned with him from 11.40pm until 3AM., when the emigration officer came aboard. After that I turned in.

The papers here, have been full of the news of London’s first air raid. Pictures of Croydon aerodrome are also shown. The Americans apologised for printing the German version of the news, and made the excuse that Britain, because of her censorship, gave no indication of what had really happened.
