16th July 1940

This morning, orders came through that we were to return to Hull to have our degaus(z)ing apparatus tested so, there was nothing for it but to return. We had to sail up and down a certain position of the river (which they called the range), about four times. Each time, they signalled from the shore to say it was not safe. This meant that we had to return to the dock – this time the Alexandria docks. How long we shall have to stay here we don’t know. All the officers and men are happy about it, but personally I would rather be at sea than in a dock, with drizzling rain, and grey skies.

Again the air raid sirens went; I’m afraid I forget to mention them sometimes, because they are so frequent!
