16th June 1942
Last night, one of the ships that was in convoy with us sighted a suspicious vessel. She was 80 miles from us. The vessel wouldn’t give a recognition signal to the shore coast station or the shop, and an aircraft was overhead. However she managed to escape and was heard this afternoon. We had an alarm at 8.30 tonight, and everyone was at action stations. A ship was signalling to us from dead astern, she was a British man of war.
We have steered due East to escape the other incident.
