16th March 1942
Today we have had a report of 4 subs and yesterday we had a total of 11.
The situation is becoming serious. There are no less than 7 subs between us and Phil and we have just broken convoy.
Surely that suggests lack of adequate escorts? The “British Resolution” was one of them today.
That’s two tankers gone out of the same company, the other one going on the 14th. Another of today’s “bag” was a Yank.
Without exaggeration, the place seems to be swarming with subs. New York will have to look lively because there is one just south of there!
The Commodore was very cut up when he saw the convoy break, and said that it was a very bad show! He’s been used to a battleship, with 16” guns and a flotilla of destroyers to protect him. Everything is ready for an emergency. The life boat transmitter and receivers are all “standing by” ready to be dumped into the boats.
