17th April 1945
Sailed at 04:00 hours for Antwerp. We cited a large pool of smoke soon after 10 o’clock, despite the hazy horizon. We thought it was Austin way but 11 o’clock we passed by the “Goldshell ” (Anglo.Sax) which was a burning entirely from stern to stern. Flames leapt very high, smoke pushed out in a never-ending stream.
Previous to this, we cited an overturned lifeboat and three lifejackets.
We reached Antwerp at 21:00 hours, and the pilot told us that the Goldshell was torpedoed at 10:00 hours yesterday morning and only seven survived. That makes a total of 50 or more killed. She was carrying benzine, like ourselves.
The pilot also mentioned another ship which was mined the day before yesterday.
