17th October 1945

I have received word that my demobbing number may soon be up. 32s may ask as soon as their agreements are finished.

We went into dry dock this morning. What a mess everything is in! Half the dry dock was smashed up and they are still repairing it now. The pumping house was practically destroyed so that it takes 10 hours to pump the dock dry!! The Red Cross have told the American army not to send any more German prisoners to France as they are not being treated according to the Geneva convention.

The passes did not come aboard until teatime, so I did not go ashore until this evening when I saw “Devils Island” with a young Humphrey Bogart and “Troubles in Canada” both films being in French.

There seems to be a lot of damage here and though the city is not large, life is not very exciting.
