Over a week has passed since my last entry! It has been far more exciting than last voyage and circumstances suggest that there are more subs. Out now than for some time.

Depth charges were dropped at various times, and one morning the signal “Subs known to be in the vicinity” was hoisted. The day before, a ship in another convoy reported “Wakes of several periscopes sighted”. Late on, one of the ships in the convoy was torpedoed.

On Wednesday or Thursday, we passed a Canadian ship; four or five hours later she was torpedoed! We must have been awful close to that sub at one time. Earlier on in the same day, another ship had been torpedoed, but no posn was given.

Last night, a Yank sent a distress message, but didn’t say whether or not he had been torpedoed. Now as I write, another ship has just reported a sub having crossed his stern! Weather has been pretty rough and cold. M. is pretty nervous now.
