19th July 1941
Once more I have been ashore – this time with the apprentice. While lunching we met another sparks – no.3 on the “City of [blank]”. He was with one of the soldiers off the same ship. The soldier was scotch and a jolly decent chap at that; well he was 20 years old! The sparks wasn’t bad – his name was Frank Gaymond, by the way and 18 years old – but his head seemed a little swelled. This is his first voyage and so far it has lasted 6.12 months. He expects to get about 3 weeks leave!
We found a marvellous new club for all the services with a proper canteen laid out like a restaurant and three beautiful table tennis tables. Did we have fun?!! Frank played a piano that was there and did it jolly well too! I also met a No.3 off the “Themistocles” or some such name – she is trooping. This is his first ship too! His No.2 is a millionaire.
