We sailed clear of St Helen’s Roads at 2300 hours and reached Cherbourg at 0500. I was on the bridge signalling from 0500/0600.  We had to move about outside the harbour until they finally decided that we should go inside the harbour to anchor. We went alongside at 1000 hours and started discharging straight away. Shore leave has now been stopped in Cherbourg.
