1st May 1940

Today is the first cloudless sky that we have had so far. The spark to get white foam breaking away from the sides of the ship never fails to fascinate me.

This is the third week at sea, and today is the end of my first complete wage month. Quite a nice feeling knowing that so far you have not spent any of a complete months wages!

We shall soon be getting into the slightly cooler weather, and this time next week or 2 to see us within sight of land. Gosh! I never knew Zealand was so far away (joke!).

I was just dropping off to sleep at 10 am, when an explosion, which sounded as if the ship must be blown to pieces, woke me out of my slumber and brought me very quickly into some close. I had suddenly remembered that it was a gun practice. We fired three rounds. It is only a 4 inch gun, but when cut in the open with nothing to absorb the shock, you feel as if all your intestine’s have jumped a few feet. The largest gun they fire in this way is the 6 inch.
