At 2 o’clock this afternoon, Paddy and I managed to get ashore by ourselves, and went by the companies bus for nothing; this took us to where we were lying at one time last voyage, and from there, a xxx ferry boat took us to Wilhelmstadt. (We didn’t want to go with Mr Bonner, because he wanted to go by taxi!).
We spent all the afternoon up until six o’clock, buying things we wanted and at 6.20, we went to an open air picture palance, and saw “Seven Gables”. It was a very novel and interesting experience.
We were told the last bus left the ferry stage at 10.26pm, so we got there an hour before time, sat down and waited.
Unfortunately, a different bus came along – it was a taxi. Consequently, we had to “sleep” in a brick building with about half a dozen stretchers and a big medicine chest. On the concrete floor, three cockroaches about 2 inches long and ¾’s wide, were spinning about at an alarming speed besides numerous smaller ones. So while one of us tried to sleep on the hard canvas stretchers, the other kept watch on the cockroaches.
The bus came at 6am.
