1st September 1945
Today is quite a memorable occasion for it is the anniversary of Germany’s invasion of Poland six years ago, and the first peace time crossing of the Atlantic that I have made.
Standing out on deck in the sun this afternoon, I had a flood of memories. It could quite easily have been 1940 – April – on the way setting course for Curacao. We would have passed through just about the same position. Looking all around one could sense the ghosts of the ships that once formed the regular Convoy but now went separate ways.
We have made a good average for today and should make the journey in 11 or 12 days. It is 3,192 miles.
