20th June 1940
We have now passed through the W. Indies in a practically northerly direction, and are now well out in the Atlantic. I think I have seen the sun in every stage of rising, at one time or another. Right from just a grey patch in the eastern sky, to a flaming ball just above the horizon. Those are the times when you say to yourself “I’m glad I took this job”. Our pessimists on board are still going strong!! Mr Salway doesn’t think we’ll reach England and if we do we shan’t be allowed to go to London. The chief electrician just sits and complains in his Irish accent, about how the people have let themselves be hoodwinked by a government which only thought of themselves “just a lot of financiers”.
We took down an hour’s worth of messages today, straight off.
