It seems incredible that we have been able to get thus far without seeing either British or German aircraft or subs. Although there are subs. all round us, we have proceeded flat out (9knots) and so far have only sighted two British planes. There’s the coastal command for you. No naval ships whatsoever. The chief engineer says they would never have been like this in the last war. Still if we haven’t the ships than that settles. We should reach the Mersey tomorrow evening. We are now (midnight) passing between the S.W Scottish Islands (Mull of Kintyre etc.) and Ireland. The weather has been fine and calm although windy.
