21st May 1942
On the spur of the moment, Dad decided that Mother, Mary and himself should come up with me to L’pool, where I joined my ship as a passenger. The journey up was far quicker than usual lasting only 4 ½ hours instead of about 6. We tried to play cards part of the time, but unfortunately we all felt tired and went to sleep! On arriving at Lime Street we had about 4 hrs to waste, so we slept in the women’s waiting room.
I joined this ship in Birkenhead, but was not allowed to go ashore for any time. I managed to phone M.D and Mary however, so they went home on the 5.25pm! It rained hard all the morning, but cleared up during the afternoon. We sailed for the river at midday. We are now at anchor. We have an R.A.F rescue launch on the foredeck and about 3 fighters.
