21st May 1944

We sailed as ordered early this morning and by 1400 hours were completely clear of New York. The weather has been glorious all day.

The passengers, this afternoon, were trying hard to find their way from the boat decks to down below.

Generally they have come into our cabin. We have about 186 women and children mostly from the censorship dept. of Bermuda. We also have some Texan miners and RAF personnel, making a total of nearly  2,000.
