22nd December 1940
We were fortunate enough this morning to have passed between the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland & Fair Head, Ireland, when a plane bombed a ship astern of us which was just entering the narrow channel between these two places. The “Sarastone” was attacked by a sub, at about 3.20pm. (more) Five minutes later the “Elax” was mined just outside Liverpool by No.10 buoy.
A very heavy air raid has been in progress over Liverpool all night. One plane flew nights. Flares were dropped some distance away but they lighted up all the ships lying at anchor. Several of the bombs made the doors rattle. The gunfire was continuous.
