24th August 1942
We sailed from the dock at 7:15 prompt, to test compasses and degaussing. Then we shall sail.
Although we are supposed to be keeping bridge signal watches, the old man says he hasn’t had any orders, so we are on W/T watch.
Neither the old man or no 1 went to a convoy conference because the old man thought he should be with the ship while she tested her compasses. No. 1 is furious.
John and I are considered to be the authority on convoy work as none of these mates have been in a convoy for about 17 months and then only once!
We have four ships so far. It’s too funny for words. The mate is “dickey” on his Morse and wishes we were on a bridge watches.
