24th December 1942
We were entering Muscat harbour when I woke up this morning. It was an impressive sight. All around us high conical shaped rocks seemed to have been thrown there in a heap by some gigantic hand. Slow formation of strata upon strata.
Perched precariously on various convenient strategic points were…
The town itself, lay in a towering… on all sides but the water front. The jail on the right.
The Sultan’s palace occupied half the front, & the Old Man went ashore. A mad man came along & hit the Old Man over the head with his turban. Fortunately the Old Man turned & drew a revolver. A few yards away the mad man was carrying several stones & throwing stones at them. Women & children were running away from him.
