25th May 1943
This morning the Purser & I went swimming off the ship’s side at 8 o’clock. The water was gorgeously warm.
Later on in the morning, the boats were lowered (first time since I joined), & Chic, John, Purser, Doc, Soldier, & Admin, & myself went for a row & swim. We had a long pull back, but eventually made it. In the afternoon we played off some of the first singles matches. John was beaten by the Purser 2-3; 3-0. I just beat the 3rd Engineer 2-2; 12-23; 23-19.
The RAF carried out its heaviest raid of the war by bombing Dortmund with 2,000 tons of bombs (15 per min).
