26th March 1944
During the 12 to 4 watch this morning, at about 0150, a Greek ship FONNIS FRANOPS Â from the next column collided with us and smashed the after part of our motor lifeboat. Fortunately it was made a glancing blow by our evading action. Those people sleeping in the rooms below the boat received quite a shock! During the 8 to 12 (the previous watch) the 3rd mate nearly put us through another ship and only just avoided a collision.
We all listened to Churchill’s speech tonight. It was a good one. Things are not going as well as we had expected in Italy.
Message came through this morning that subs were in the vicinity.
