28th November 1942
At about 930 this morning, the view towards the land resembled in every way a Cowes Regatta for no less than 40 dhows with sails billowing white, were rounding the point. A truly spectacular sight.
The dhows have during the course of the day removed a large portion of the cargo and we should leave tomorrow.
The news today is that the French fleet has scuttled itself in Toulon Harbour, Germany has occupied Toulon (with the Italians) and the small French army allowed by the armistice ruling – has been demobilised. It is not known yet yet how many ships escaped or to what extent they have been scuttled, but German dive bombers flew over Toulon at the time, and the entrance to the harbour was mined.
