28th April 1945
We arrived at XXX (near Shell Haven) as about 17:00 hours and Ron (3rd mate), Pete and I went home before the gangway was down.
I cycled as far as Tilbury and caught a train up to Lewisham. From here, I cycled down to Purley. Auntie Molly and Uncle Reg were at home at the time. It was 2115 when I arrived. The evening papers were full of peace offers from Germany, but there seems to be no confirmation as yet. Iris was up at Joyce’s. Renee is still on holiday in North Wales with Marjorie Lanham. There has been a great deal of talk of late about the horror camps of Buchenwald and Belsen, where various morbid-minded “columnists” have found bounteous material for well worn epithets. maybe if they had had a good tour of the Bengali famine area previously their conscience would not have allowed them to obey the “higher up” commands.
