29th May 1942

Another day of misty rain and general dullness.

The old man told us of how one of the Clean Line Ships brought 4,000 refugees from Gibraltar. They had no option because they just swarmed on board. The voyage was a lot longer than anticipated; food was short, sanitary conditions were appalling. There were several births on board. The ship was only a little larger than this one!
