2nd August 1940

I had rather a busy time this morning (just after 1am anyway!), because 3 distress messages came through besides another ship being attacked by aircraft! Two of the three ships attacked by submarine, were hit within 3 metres of each other, and on practically the same position. The third ship was also very close.

I think that makes about 7 ships in 2 days have gone down. Still they have been averaging 3 a day since we left! (I shall not let anyone read this diary until the war is over or I might get run in for defeatists talk!!).

The ship has been rolling very badly indeed. It is practically impossible to keep still. Everything has to be put away, and drawers locked. You’ve no idea how terrific the strain is when she heals over to anything more than 60°.

As I haven’t mentioned it before, I will say now that I am thoroughly enjoying this trip. It certainly is a new experience.

Ships sunk, were the “TRINDA”, “ALEXIA”, and  “LUCERNA”.
