30th April 1941
At 10 o’clock we arrived off the island, which is now becoming quite familiar to me. As we cruised along the coast, I saw once again, the strange, hilly contour of the land which surrounds the huge lagoon. I remembered the night that we sailed past these same hills, homeward bound on the “Waiwera”, and how I and everyone else, sat on deck, and watched the full moon glittering in our wake. There is something strange and fascinating about this barren, shrub covered island, which by all the laws of reasoning, is absurd. For instance when we arrived at “Wilhelmstadt” (Wilemstad), those who hadn’t been there before, could help noticing how pretty and colourful the buildings looked in just the same way as I couldn’t when I first saw the place. All the same, I think everybody agrees that once or perhaps twice, is quite enough!
We went in and out of the lagoon three times during the afternoon and eventually we ended up at “Bullen Bay” which is where the mutiny took place last trip.
There is no town here. Just four bungalows and dozens of huge silvery tanks. To hire a taxi it costs 3 guildas. Of course you share it if several of you go.
