Location
At Sea - Halifax to Liverpool
Age
17 Years

30th August 1940

Today will probably be remembered by many of the crew, for some time to come. The speed of the convoy was supposed to be 8.5 knots, but all of a sudden “Ethel Radcliffe” decided to drop back three places in her column, this shifting the three ships behind her. The engineers complained that the firemen weren’t keeping up the steam, so some sailors and the mate went down to do some shovelling – or I should say stoking. The “old man” was white with rage, and shrieking (something after the style of Hitler), to an immobile chief engineer. Eventually however, we caught up, after which the skipper was as peaceful as a lamb. He threatened to drop out of the convoy several times, but think he would regret it very much. We ought to be home either Sunday or Monday week.

I heard an English coast station for the first time since we left Halifax, which means we are about half way. London seems to be having a good time of it!
