30th November 1941
Churchill‘s birthday! For the last four days I have had to copy the press from Rugby – that’s how I know it’s C’s birthday!
We have had bad weather ever since Halifax, but never so bad as last year. Being a tanker – and overloaded – we naturally ship an awful lot of water. At a generous estimate when a big wave comes on board there is momentarily about 100 or 200 tons of water on deck! And always there are a number of tons.
Today has been the worst – so far, with sweeping, howling blizzards, the never-ending grey sky and sea, and huge waves towering to the level of the lower bridge and coming crashing down over our bulwarks.
A tough life, but a Grand one – but not for the lifetime!
M‘s nerves are in a very bad way. He now says he will leave the sea altogether when the war is over. Whenever a wave comes over he jumps, and a small “pucker” comes on his forehead. He gets scared and his sleep, and sometimes stays up nearly all night. He’s heading for the rocks. Most people nerves are on edge these days. Not like the good old days. This aviation stuff has made an awful difference!
