31st December 1941
We lay at anchor off the sun oil wharf near Chester, for about 2 hours this morning eventually docking by 2.30pm. It was late afternoon before we were cleared to go ashore.
I went up to Chester, which is about 6 or 7 miles from Marcus Hook where we are lying. Most shops were shut, so I went to the pictures & saw “Sergeant York”. I stayed there until after midnight to see what celebrations for new year would be like. They were not as big as they would have been in peace time. I listened to the commentary from Times Square, New York. Apparently, everything was as usual there.
