One of the escorting destroyers sighted a submarine this morning, and opened up on it with his gun, afterwards dropping depth charges. Later the private said he saw a periscope.

Not long afterwards a couple of huge mines came floating along, it was a good job we saw them before they hit us! The weather has been beautiful all day, with the sea an absolute dead calm. At 4 o’clock we sighted Mull of Oa in Scotland, and soon afterwards, the north coast of Ireland. As we went on we drew nearer to the Irish coast, and had a first class view of the hard, rugged cliffs with splashes of emerald green grass here and there. The sun was very high at 6pm, so the deep shadows east “by” enhanced the beauty of the scene.

Paddy seems to have suddenly lost all hope of us dry-docking. He sure is a queer guy to understand. I should have thought getting back, safely was enough to be thankful for.
