3rd November 1941
Mr B, the appr. M and myself went up to Houston at 1pm in the Consul’s advisor’s car and frequently touched 85 m.p.h, the road being as straight as a die, and four rows of traffic being allowed for. At the club we played table tennis until 3 o’clock, when I was picked up by Mrs Kessler, who took me shopping in her car, and showed me what to get and where to get it. Then she picked up her daughter, who was about 19 or 20, and we all went back to dinner. I felt rather embarrassed at the way they ate, because they only use a fork for any dish, whereas I used a knife and fork. There were one or two other differences as well. I had a long discussion with her daughter and found everything very, very interesting. At 8 o’clock, we left for the concert. It was opening night so consequently there were a great many evening dresses. We had a really grand time. The people we went with, were Mrs Doucette and her 2 daughters, Marie and Dorothy. Marie is 16 or 17, Dot. Is 15. The elder is much nicer than the younger in nature and is quite attractive as regards looks. Considering that they live in $100,000 (£250,000) house, they are a remarkably unassuming pair.
We have both been invited out to dinner with Mrs Doucette at her house at 6 o’clock tomorrow, and we hope to see an indoor cine show. Another grand day.
It is possible we shall shift down to Baytown tomorrow and sail in the evening.
