3rd September 1945

It is exactly 6 years ago today that World War II broke on us.

Strange that this should be the real start of my first peace time voyage. How many thoughts come flooding back to me! There are no buildings, trees, landmarks, on this vast ocean to recall old memories, but to those who have crossed it there are other things to remind them. How many ships must live below us now? How many? Perhaps a lonely raft or lifeboat crossed this very course but a few months ago, tossed by the same waves, so full of power, yet now not half so dangerous.
