I cycled up to town today. Cycled about 10-12 miles out of town in a semicircle. I posted letters in the post office and had to speak French. Very few people seem to speak English. At the.”Echem” Cinema there was adventures of David Balfour (Freddie Bartholomew and Water Baxter) advertised. At “Le Cinearc”, at Rue de Montegrand there was Rob Montgomery and Ingrid Bergman.
As I came back into Marseille, I went on Rue Sainte-Cécile, then turned left into Boulevard Ville. This led me towards the Notre Dame Church on the hill. First Rue de la Croix, from where I obtained a Grand view of the town, then Rue Fortunee. Working my way back to the centre of town, Place St Terreol, I continued on down Rue Terreol to the ship.
The architecture of the houses outside Marseille was very definitely Spanish Moroccan, with long-pitched roofs, pantilar, elaborate Gable-ends, overhanging eaves, towers, etc.
The damage in the dock is colossal and not one point the water has been completely drained from one basin, leaving small ships high and dry. I had a haircut for 100 Franks (10 shillings) and shampoo and massage. The barber did not speak English.
