1st June 1940
Today the weather has been mild, nice and blowy, and spasmodically sunny. I heard the skipper say that we should be back on the 2nd of July. News came through on the wireless, that a German submarine is operating off the Spanish coast, and has sunk a merchant ship. Also that there is one in the North Sea. We seem to have got them pretty well in hand for this is the first I’ve heard of submarines since we sailed. The ship’s clock will go on an hour approximately every two days now.
Although our food is very good it is hardly suitable for a woman. Especially the carving of the meat, which is anything but delicate! It is pitiful to see our passenger chewing away, trying to get finished at the same time as the officers, and yet not too crude in the process. I see now that she is very delicate having a very pale face. She wanted a bath this morning, but it was out of order, so when she turned on the steam jet, she forgot about the water, and nearly blew the place to bits. When she did turn the water on, oil came splashing out all over the bath!
