5th August 1940

Looking at the heading of this page, I see “August Bank Holiday” –  does it seem possible?

We are now just entering on the Newfoundland banks, and already we have had pea soup fog. I am told that there is fog round these parts for 300 of the 365 days in the year.

We ought (according to the latest report), to be in N. York by Sunday and Albany by Monday. It is quite amusing on this ship, because out of the 4 officers (skipper included), only one can work out a position within 3 miles of the correct one. Strangely enough, it is the third mate who knows something about navigation!

By rights, we in the wireless room ought to have the ship’s position every half an hour – especially in the danger area. On this ship they think they’ve done jolly well if they get one position a day, and that is inaccurate that would be useless for a distress!
