5th July 1941
The papers were very disappointed today because comparatively few people turned out for the national holiday – Independence Day which was yesterday, July 4th.
I spent most of the day in Battery Place, drawing Skyscrapers! It took all my courage because the place was crowded!
I have come to the conclusion that the New York subway system, though quite good, is nothing like London’s.
I wandered from B.P down 3rd Ave. to 28th Street from there to 5th and 6th Ave and the Empire State Building. From here I went to 7th Ave & 4 & 5th and back to the ship via the Christopher Street ferry.
