We have just heard the cheering news of fresh air-attacks off the S.E. coast, on merchant shipping!
At about 3 pm yesterday afternoon we came in sight of an island called “Raivavai”. At first sight it looked like just “another island”, but as we got closer we could see that it was something out of the ordinary. It was very hilly—almost mountainous—and was covered in a gorgeous light green coloured grass. The sun, shining on it, gave this green hundreds of different shades. At one end the island was comparatively flat, and was cultivated. A large coral reef stretched parallel with the coast at some distance out, so making a lovely lagoon. The water was a beautiful delicate light blue, because of the white sand. There are 400 hundred inhabitants, and the island belongs to the French. By the way, all the inhabitants are relatives. It certainly seemed the sort of place to escape to when war is on. A real dream island.
