6th August 1940
Fog was very thick again early this morning, and the mournful note of the ship’s siren roused me from my slumbers just before 8A.M. In case you imagine that I had been turned-in all night, I will add that I didn’t turn in till 3.30am.
Soon after breakfast the weather cleared and became as one would like it always to be – fine. The breakfast by the way, was another point of interest. It consisted of an uneatable steak, and 3 small potatoes. This was proceeded by a plate of porridge, and it concluded with bread and butter and marmalade. We have run out of fresh meat, so will be on salt beef and salt fish after today (we have no pig). The meat at dinner was a “bit off” but was surrounded with onions and seasoning, to make you forget it!
I’m afraid I’m not quite so fat as I was last trip.
