The weather today has been really beautiful not tropically hot, but nevertheless just nice and warm enough to make it pleasant to sit on deck.

I would never have thought that there could have been so many defeatists aboard one ship. Really they are terrible. For instance the chief electrician came in the wireless cabin this morning, seated himself comfortably in a chair opposite me, and proceeded to tell me how many of the famous people of today such as Lords and Ladies – were “black-shirts”. He brought up all the bad news concerning the retreat from Dunkirk, instead of the good news, and even told me that it was quite possible for my father to be a “black-shirt”. And I was taking all the messages home, to show him. I didn’t like to tell him that they’d be a bit out of date by then!! Then to a lesser degree Mr Salway is a defeatist. At any rate he always goes for the bad news. And according to him the Germans are a wonderful crowd! The 3RD mate, and the 2nd steward are another pair. I was very comforted to hear a very good talk by J.B. Priestly – “Britain Speaks”.
