7th August 1940

After 12 days of 12 hours a day on watch, I am beginning to feel a little tired, and consequently I haven’t quite got the same enthusiasm for drawing and architecture. I think they take more out of you than anything – if you keep at them.

Germany and France seem in a pretty bad way, and I understand that they are dying at a rate of a 1,000 a day in Warsaw, owing to the famine. It seems impossible that 4 weeks ago I was travelling up to Hull now, and now I’m very nearly in America! The “Waiwera” by the way is probably ½ way across the Pacific – although she sailed the same day as us.

The weather by the way (to get back to that age old subject) has been perfect all day, and the sea has been as lovely a blue as I have ever seen before. This is probably due to the fact that the water is comparatively shallow round these parts, so consequently it doesn’t look quite so viscous.
