7th June 1940

The sea today, has had that very smooth kind of look – almost like a mirror but there has been a slight swell as there usually is with this kind of weather. It was very pleasant sitting on deck, reading (not novels!). The days seem to be slipping by pretty quickly now, it being over a week since we left Wellington. On board, it is really Thursday, although we are gradually catching up the times. The chief steward (also chief purser) asked me if I knew whether I was receiving £2.10 a month war bonus or £5 a month. I very hurriedly told him £5 a month! I often wonder what Iris would say if she were woken up at 11.45 every night! The poor old cadets brings the position of the ship to the wireless cabin, every half hour. He has a 4 hr. night watch but nevertheless says he feels as if he never gets any sleep.

By leaving a bit of what J.B Priestly said about defeatists laying about on a piece of paper (completely by accident of course!), I have managed to make Mr Salway stop talking to me as if there were no hope left.
