7th September 1943
We had some shore grub today, & it sure was good! Ginger Alan was on the Mantola when John & I went to see Jock. He was brought from the Middle East by them after he was bombed & sunk on the “Talamba” (Hospital Ship). It was during the initial landings on Sicily. Apparently some of the wounded troops they were taking aboard were very brave. One fellow with two broken wrists refused any help when getting into a life-boat. Others wanted to go on fighting. The crew panicked, a boat full of screaming nurses broke when … several of the crew jumped in, & the whole lot went into the water. Only one nurse was lost.
