8th January 1945

Last night in the 3rd Mate’s watch (8-12) we all but ran down the ship ahead. They reckon there was only 20 feet to spare. The Old Man said the 3rd mate (Cliff) made a good job of it. He had said “hard to port” as soon as he’d seen it but she hadn’t answered the helm so he put her full ahead and just scraped past!

The weather has been fairly blowy but nothing really bad.
